Set Fire to the Rain

Who doesn't have an Adele song in their head? I could listen to her sing all day long and never tire of her voice.

"But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Let it burn while I cry
"Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name..."

River of Dreams

There's a lot of interesting imagery in this Billy Joel song, one of my favorites.

"In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
From the mountains of faith
To a river so deep

I must be looking for something
Something sacred I lost
But the river is wide
And it's too hard to cross

And even though I know the river is wide
I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore
And try to cross to the opposite side
So I can finally find out what I've been looking for..."

Anything Goes

This has to be one of my favorite albums (remember LPs?) of all time. Not really a kiddie song, if you know what I mean.

"My way, your way
Anything goes tonight
My way, your way
Anything goes..."

X-Files Theme Music

Ok, no lyrics to post to this one. It does make me wonder what my day holds when I wake up to this music.......

Catch A Wave

I must be ready for winter to be over, although it really hasn't even begun here on the East coast this year.

"Don't be afraid to try the greatest sport around
Everybody tries it once
Those who don't just have to put it down
You paddle out turn around and raise
And baby that's all there is to the coastline craze
Catch a wave and you're sittin' on top of the world...."

Iko Iko

On the cusp of Mardi Gras, and the morning after attending a Beausoleil and Marcia Ball concert, it's not a surprise to wake up with a song like this in my head. There are so many great versions of this tune, which made it hard to pick one.

"My grandma and your grandma
Sitting by the fire
My grandma says to your grandma
'I'm gonna set your flag on fire'..."

It Can Happen

I absolutely loved the 90125 album by Yes when it came out in 1983, and I played it endlessly. This wasn't my favorite song, but it reminded me of how much I need to go listen to this CD again.

"You can fool yourself
You can cheat until you're blind
You can cut your heart
It can happen

You can mend the wires
You can feed the soul apart
You reach
It can happen to you
It can happen to me
It can happen to everyone eventually..."

We Fell In Love

It's only been playing on the radio incessantly for the last few months. Over and over. Again and again. No surprise that this Rihanna song is in my head this morning.

"We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place..."
(Nobody ever said it was a profound set of lyrics)

Jungle Love

Here's one from my youth. Growing up in the 70's, I loved the Steve Miller Band, and still listen to them frequently.

"Jungle love, it's drivin' me mad
It's makin' me crazy
"Jungle love, it's drivin' me mad
It's makin' me crazy..."

I Need To Know

I never particularly liked this song. I'm beginning to think songs we don't like work themselves into our brains the way cats know which people don't like them. Yes?

"I need to know..."
(That's all you're getting; this song annoys me THAT much)

Knee Deep

Must have been thinking of vacation again :-)    I am by no means a lover of country music, but I do really like this song by the Zac Brown Band (with my recurring friend, Jimmy Buffett).

"Wishing I was knee deep in the water somewhere
Got the blue sky breeze and it don't seem fair
Only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair..."

Weather With You

Must be because I was editing a playlist for my upcoming tropical vacation, but I woke up with another Jimmy Buffett song in my head this morning. Actually, it was originally penned and recorded by Crowded House. But it was definitely Jimmy's rendition in my head. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

"Everywhere you go you always take the weather with you
Everywhere you go always take the weather..."

Whenever I Call You Friend

It's back to the 70's today, with this Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks (I love her!) hit. Woke up with only the chorus in my head, and couldn't remember the title for the life of me.

"Sweet love showin' us a heavenly light
I've never seen such a beautiful sight
Sweet love flowin' on us every night
I know forever we'll be doing it..."

No Sugar Tonight

Ah, The Guess Who! Haven't heard this song in a long time; used to really love it.

"No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me..."

Brown Eyed Women

It's always a good thing to wake up with a Grateful Dead song in one's head. Today's selection is "Brown Eyed Women", one of my favorites!

"Brown eyed women and red grenadine
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean
Sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down
And it looks like the old man's gettin' on..."

Changes in Latitudes

Ah, a welcome song this morning! I must have been dreaming of my upcoming Caribbean cruise.....

"Reading departure signs in some big airport
Reminds me of the places I've been
Visions of good times that brought so much pleasure
Makes me want to go back again
If it suddenly ended tomorrow
I could somehow adjust to the fall
Good times and riches and son of a bitches
I've seen more than I can recall"

I Know What Boys Like

The Waitresses know what boys like, and I know that what I don't like is this song. Released in 1982, this minor hit for the band has remained in my head all day. Time to go crank up the Metallica and banish this song!

Life's Not A Race

The band 311 is hard to categorize, but is most often referred to as an "alternative rock" band, although I think they're more funk-y, rap-y, rock. Any way you slice it, I often listen to them. And that would include this morning, when I awoke to this particular mellow, flowing tune. The song starts off with these lyrics, which are perfect for a Sunday morning, no?

"A day like today is for you
to let your mind unwind, like you ought to
feel the earth turn round when your heart rate slows
contemplating the thing only your heart knows
that life's not a race"

Jersey Girl

When I woke up this morning, Bruce Springsteen's version of the great Tom Waits song, "Jersey Girl", was in my head. ~ "'cause down the shore everything's alright" ~ and ironically, I'm a Jersey Girl, and ironically, I'm going "down the shore" (as we say here in Jersey) today. What better way to start off a blog about the songs that appear in my head. Every. Single. Morning. I'm not blogging this for attention, or out of vanity, but rather to document them so I can look back and be amused. If you are amused by them, all the better. Enjoy!
